Someone's very kindly sent me a handful of photos. Because all my notes from this period are in storage, detailed explanation of what the design was supposed to achieve will have to wait. Hopefully, by then I should have some more pictures too.
What I can tell you is that this was staged at by the UEA Drama Society at the Maddermarket Theatre in Norwich in the late spring of 2004. The director was Ned Glasier, and the producer Kate Catchesides. One of the aims was to strip the space right back to its basic elements and then use light to focus the attention in onto particlar events and tones. This was mainly achieved with lots of carefully focused and tinted washes, and carefully judged fades between different areas and colours. We then punched some more dramatic specials onto particular set pieces.
I think that this show, despite being on a more conventional stage than most drama society productions, exemplified the work we did in making a virtue of the minimal features of a studio space to create texture and visual complexity without complicated (and expensive) setting and props.
I'm not sure who to credit for the photos— they were provided by Kate Forester, who might or might not be the photographer.
